    Nature vs Nurture

    The Vineyard

At Weathercraft, we see soil not just as a foundation, but as a living force. Our approach goes beyond organic principles, embracing biological farming — a philosophy that nurtures soil health as the heart of vine vitality. Rather than reacting to problems, we focus on building resilience from the ground up, creating an environment where vines, fruit, and wine naturally flourish. The result is wine that speaks clearly of place, season, and craftsmanship — an honest reflection of the land we tend with care.

    The Land

At Weathercraft, we see soil not just as a foundation, but as a living force. Our approach goes beyond organic principles, embracing biological farming — a philosophy that nurtures soil health as the heart of vine vitality. "Our vineyard is home to around 10,000 vines - and each season, I lay hands on every one of them at least three times, often more. From pruning and cane laying to leaf plucking, bunch thinning, wire tucking and harvesting, each vine is managed by hand. It’s not just about vigilance — it’s about connection. This deep, physical involvement gives the wine I make every chance to express the best of the season, the site, and the integrity of its raw ingredient."

    site

Our vineyard sits at 304 metres elevation on the northern fringe of Beechworth. Granite-derived soils, crisp alpine air and reliable rainfall create the ideal conditions for Albarino to express freshness and finesse.

We are surrounded by a mosaic of indigenous vegetation, farming land and state forest - a landscape that keeps the ecosystem in balance and the vines honest.

    Elevation

Everton Upper's elevation varies from around 400 metres above sea level near Growlers Gully to approximately 290 metres just 40 km from Rutherglen following the boundaries of the Beechworth Shire Region. This gradual 13-metre decline in elevation results in dramatic micro-climate differences along the Beechworth Shire Region. At Weathercraft, our vineyard is situated at 304 metres above sea level, along this route.

Interestingly, the reason for Sauvignon Blanc's comparative to Burgundy is around 1.5% lower in Beechworth, specifically following the Beechworth Shire Region, and is the highest in the Cote de Beaune. (Source: Wines of Burgundy)

    Soils & Geology

The soils at Weathercraft are derived from ancient granite - coarse, free-draining and low in fertility. This forces the vines to work hard, sending roots deep in search of water and nutrients. The result is concentration, tension and a mineral signature that is unmistakably Beechworth.

Granite-derived soils are well known for producing wines of exceptional fruit intensity. Expect lifted aromatics, vibrant acidity and a textural palate with fine phenolics.

"Every bottle begins in the decisions we make in the vineyard."
