Where to buy Weathercraft Wine

Discover where to buy Weathercraft wine and why purchasing directly from small growers and producers matters.

Where to buy Weathercraft Wine

It sounds like such a simple question, and it is one we are often asked. However, there is much more behind the answer than simply directing someone to a shelf or website.

The most reliable place to buy Weathercraft is directly from us through our online wine shop. You can also purchase wine from our cellar door by prior arrangement, join our private wine club for priority access, or enjoy Weathercraft at selected restaurants that share our commitment to quality, provenance and thoughtful farming.

Our wines are not widely distributed through retail stores. Availability at restaurants also changes according to the wine, vintage and allocation, so buying directly remains the best way to access our current releases.

How COVID Changed the Way We Sold Wine

At the beginning of 2020, we were successfully selling our wines into restaurants while steadily growing a wonderful wine club filled with enthusiastic supporters of handmade, high-quality wines at approachable prices.

When COVID arrived and lockdowns began, that momentum came to an immediate halt.

Restaurants closed their doors and wholesale wine orders stopped almost completely. At the time, around 80 per cent of our sales were made through restaurants, so the effect on our small business was significant.

You may remember me appearing online with our Lockdown Survival Pack, inviting people to:

“Buy direct, help a winemaker and help flatten the curve.”

That little video travelled much further than I expected, reaching people across Australia and changing our sales model almost overnight.

Consumers who may never previously have imagined ordering wine directly from a small producer began buying online. It represented an enormous shift in behaviour and one that, as a producer, we welcomed.

Rethinking Convenience

That experience led me to question what we really mean by convenience.

As human beings, we tend to favour convenience over almost everything else. But when buying online from a producer can bring wine directly to your door, is that any less convenient than purchasing it from a physical store?

More importantly, convenient for whom?

Growing up as the daughter of Spanish migrants, supermarket visits were not the centre of our family’s food culture.

We gathered fruit and vegetables from our garden and orchard. My dad brought home freshly caught fish and crustaceans after foraging at the local surf beach. We visited farms for fresh milk and cheese and, at times, chose animals for our family’s own consumption.

At the local markets, butchers greeted my parents by name, usually with a handshake and a warm embrace. They would prepare our pre-selected animal from nose to tail, either cut into portions or left whole according to our wishes.

This was simply how we ate.

The few things I remember my mum buying from Mediterranean Wholesalers included tins of anchovies and tuna, coffee beans, rice and the occasional panettone.

The Seduction of Convenience

When I entered adulthood and ventured out into the world, I took some of those habits with me.

Over time, however, the lure of convenience became difficult to resist. Shortly after beginning university, I became a regular supermarket shopper, convincing myself that the food was still high quality and tasted much the same.

Convenience is seductive in a fast-paced world. We persuade ourselves that it saves money, time and effort—and sometimes it does.

What I understand now, after becoming a farmer and producer myself, is that convenience can also carry a hidden price.

That price may be paid by the farmer through wafer-thin or even negative margins. It may be paid by the consumer through higher prices for products that have passed through multiple layers of distribution, warehousing, sales and transport.

Sometimes it is paid through a gradual loss of quality, transparency and connection.

Why Does Buying Through More Layers Cost More?

Between a producer and the final customer, there may be a distributor, warehouse, sales representative and retailer, with freight and handling costs added at several points.

Each business within that chain must earn enough to remain viable. Distribution and retail can provide producers with valuable market access, and we are fortunate to work with excellent restaurant and trade partners who understand our wines.

However, each additional layer also reduces the portion of the final price that returns to the person who grew or made the product.

When farmers cannot earn a reasonable return from their work and land, they may eventually leave the industry, increase production to compensate for reduced margins or adopt more intensive systems to remain financially viable.

The cheapest product at the point of purchase may therefore come with costs that are not immediately visible.

What This Means for Weathercraft

This brings me back to our vineyard and wine business.

When people ask, “Where can I buy Weathercraft wine?”, my first answer is:

“Directly from us.”

We are dedicated to producing high-quality, minimal-intervention wines with a clear connection to the vineyard in which they were grown.

Buying directly through our online store gives you access to our current releases, while purchasing at the cellar door provides an opportunity to meet us and experience the wines in the place where they are grown and made.

Our private wine club offers members priority access to new releases, limited wines and selected past vintages, where available.

Weathercraft in Restaurants

We are also fortunate to have built relationships with sommeliers, chefs and restaurant owners who share our commitment to quality.

These venues do more than place a bottle on a wine list. They take the time to understand where the wine comes from, how the vineyard is farmed and why each wine has been made in a particular way.

Like our wine club members and direct customers, they value a genuine connection with the source of their produce—and, perhaps more importantly, with how it has been grown.

These restaurant relationships, together with referrals from our members and customers, have introduced Weathercraft to a growing community of people who share similar values.

Because restaurant listings and allocations change, we do not publish a permanent list of places serving our wines. If you discover Weathercraft at a restaurant, through a friend or at an event, the most dependable way to find that wine again is to contact us directly.

Buying Local With Intention

Australia is often described as the lucky country and, compared with many economies around the world, we are fortunate.

However, there can be a gap between the future we say we want and the purchasing decisions we make each day.

We may want sustainable agriculture, thriving regional communities, small independent businesses and greater transparency about how our food and wine are produced. Yet our everyday spending does not always support those outcomes.

Buying local means more than visiting a shop located nearby. It means thinking about where a product was grown or made, how far it has travelled and how much of the purchase price returns to its producer.

It can mean buying directly from farmers and makers through online stores, farm gates, cellar doors and local markets.

There will always be a time and place for convenience. This is not about abandoning it completely. It is about finding a balance that is both achievable and sustainable.
